Winter Blooms

These plants are providing color on Wednesday, December 31st.

Brassica oleracea, cabbage. A common winter ornamental, I got this one at Fred Meyer. Not a 'bloom' exactly, but a colorful display of leaves that stay beautiful all winter. Supposedly they will send up a stalk with a flower in the Spring, but I've not been so lucky.

A lovely winter porch plant. That pile of dirt in the corner is because this poor cabbage has been knocked down twice by the dog with her big behind. She gets hyper-excited when she thinks she is going for a ride in the truck. The pile is still there because it's too cold outside for 'gardening.'

Viburnum tinus, viburnum or laurustinus. Lovely tiny buds, though not much from a distance. I'll have to check back to see if they open.

This particular plant was looking terrible last spring, not sure why, but seems to have bounced back.

Gerbera jamesonii, gerbera daisy. Not the best specimen, but what is it doing here in mid-winter??

There is the whole plant in the blue pot. I recently made this shelf under my window so the cats can go in and out. I don't know if I will keep it come spring, though, it looks a bit shabby.

Rhododendron, not exactly sure which species or variety. Apparently one that blooms in winter. Very lovely pink flowers.

I just checked (Jan. 22nd), and now there are at least 15 blooms on this little Rhododendron.

Helleborus orientalis, helleborus. Well know for winter blooms, they are beautiful.

I just took this picture today with my phone. (01/22/26)
