Horrid Thistle

Updated: Apr 26

Cirsium horridulum

The plant has several other common names, including 'spiny thistle' and 'bristly thistle'. You get the idea - it's a pokey poker.

These green beetles love this flower.

There must be something pretty delicious down there.

And this wasp and bee, too.

The pasture near Hempstead, Texas where I took these pictures. Look closely, and you will see a pair of Canada Geese flying off. These two have a nest at the base of one tree on this pond. Canada Geese nesting in Texas? That's what I thought, but apparently it does occur here and there. I don't really blame them. Who wants to go all that way up to Canada when you could just stop in Texas!
